Sue: After an ever-changing career starting in teaching, through to Project Management, consultancy and serving as Guildford’s first woman MP, I started volunteering at Watts. I’d been seeing Reg for some time when I finally popped the question – would he like to steward with me?
Reg: At first I wasn’t sure. I worried that I didn’t know enough about George and Mary Watts but Sue assured me there was plenty of information available. Once she explained that visitors would be expected to listen to me, I jumped at the chance. Centre of attention? Bring it on.
Sue: What I didn’t expect was just how much Reg would enjoy stewarding, now he knows more about the Limnerslease ceilings than me.
Reg: My experience of volunteering in the past was running a junior football team. At least at Watts I don’t have to stand in the rain and mud!
Sue: I enjoy meeting our visitors and showing them something of George and Mary’s work and getting to know other stewards.
Reg: Stewarding is rewarding. Most people thank me at the end of their visit and I’m pretty sure it’s not because they can finally stop listening to me! Although it doesn’t quite beat watching professional football! (I was at Wembley in 1966. I was behind the goal. The ball never crossed the line!).
We couldn’t operate without the support of our passionate and dedicated volunteers, and we are incredibly proud of them all.
