News Story

The Artist’s Studio Museum Network is a creative coalition of 158 museums in 24 countries – founded and run by Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village. Together we share knowledge, ideas and best practice, and promote and support one another. In honour of the Halima Cassell opening at Watts, we are looking at a handful of ceramics treasures in our Network.

Leach Pottery in Cornwall

The Leach Pottery Museum (pictured opposite) in St. Ives, Cornwall is the original home and workplace of revered potter Bernard Leach (1887-1979). Leach was born in Hong Kong and spent large parts of his life travelling in China and Japan, where he was first inspired to explore studio pottery by witnessing the high-temperature raku firing process. Visitors today can explore the 100 year old pottery; the clay room, the throwing room with kick wheels and the Japanese climbing kiln.

At Charleston you can see The Famous Women Dinner Service, a collection of 50 hand-decorated plates by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, celebrating famous women throughout history. Commissioned by art historian and museum director Kenneth Clark in 1932, the dinner service was painted by the artists during their time at Charleston.
