Working in an A5 concertina sketchbook, this exciting workshop will explore responding freely to the garden with playful marks and close observation. We will explore new ways to record impressions of the joyous flora in the garden, layering inks, charcoal, pencil, pastels and other media. Looking at mass, tone and line, we will add interest and depth to our work. We will take our work into the studio to look at enhancing our compositions with collage, erasure and more layering. At the end of the session you will have a lively, full sketchbook that you can continue working on at home and use for further exploration. Dress for mess!
Artist Jane Alexander:
Primarily a painter, my work ranges from abstract mixed media landscape and collage to expressive watercolours and drawings. My work is sensory, capturing the feeling and memory of a garden, a landscape, a place. Using line and repetition, I often paint from life in my garden at home and the RHS garden at Wisley, working within the rhythm of the seasons. I'm drawn to strong colours, but always choose a limited palette to reflect the subject and time of year. Informed by my background in publishing and my Foundation at UCA Farnham, my work often has a strong graphic element.
