Access guide: planning your visit

We have put together this access guide to help you plan your visit to Watts Gallery - Artists' Village.

We hope it helps with what to expect in advance of your visit.

Arriving at Watts Gallery - Artists' Village

If you are driving, you will find free parking and Blue Badge parking on site.

There are car parks on both sides of our site, at Watts Gallery and Limnerslease: Artists' Home, follow the parking signs on your arrival. Taxis can drop off at our car parks.

Car parks by Watts Gallery are a short distance from our Visitor Centre, Shop, Tea Shop and galleries.

The car park by Limnerslease: Artists' Home is a short uphill walk to the historic home and studios. Visitors with access needs can be dropped off at the top of the road before parking, please follow the signs.

Buses stop on the road outside the gallery, this is a short distance from the Visitor Centre.

You will see the Visitor Centre and Shop building when you arrive. Please enter using the left-hand side door by the car park.

Visitor Centre and Shop

  • Our Visitor Centre and Shop are housed in the Pottery Building.
  • The floor outside and inside is concrete.
  • There is a double-door entrance with level access.
  • The lighting is low, with some smells of products such as soap and perfume.
  • There are delicate items on display such as ceramics.
  • There are ramps with step-free access throughout the building. Please note there are two steps to access our Books section.
  • A member of staff will be at the desk, here you can purchase tickets, ask questions and buy products from the Shop.

Watts Contemporary Gallery

  • There are stairs up to Watts Contemporary Gallery. Due to the nature of our historic site, we regret that Watts Contemporary Gallery does not have lift access.
  • There is a handrail and gripped floor on the stairs.
  • The floor is wooden in this space, with skylights and white walls.
  • The exhibitions and art change in this space, from 2D artworks, hung on the wall, to 3D artworks on tables.

Tea Shop

  • The Tea Shop is located in a red brick building next to the Visitor Centre and Shop.
  • Upon arrival, the door will be open with Tea Shop team members at the front, please ask if you need any assistance.
  • The building has level, step-free access.
  • There are toilets towards the back of the building, with an accessible toilet.
  • Table service and takeaway are available.
  • There is indoor and outdoor seating.
  • The chairs are armless and wooden. Highchairs are available.
  • The tables vary in size from seating 2 to 6 people.
  • The floor is concrete.
  • The Tea Shop has windows and a wooden-beam ceiling.
  • The Tea Shop can be busy and sometimes loud, with smells of food.

An accessible toilet. The room has a tiled wall, with a toilet and handrails. There is a fold-out changing facility on the wall.

Watts Gallery

  • Watts Gallery is a short distance from the Tea Shop and Visitor Centre, you will pass flower beds and trees.
  • There are two benches situated outside the building.
  • The fine gravelled path has a slight incline.
  • The gallery has level access.
  • The gallery floor is wooden with air vents, they sometimes creak.
  • The lower Temporary Exhibition and Sculpture Gallery have concrete floors.
  • There are lifts to go down to the De Morgan Gallery and Temporary Exhibition/Sculpture Gallery.
  • The stairs are wooden and have handrails.
  • There are two gender-neutral toilets, this includes an accessible toilet.
  • The lighting varies across the gallery with some natural skylights and low-lit rooms. When certain works are on display, such as drawings and watercolours, the lighting levels may be lowered.
  • The Temporary Exhibition space has regularly changing displays. You can check what exhibitions are on before your visit.

Limnerslease: Artists' Home

  • Limnerslease is situated on the other side of our site, you will need to cross the road to get there.
  • There is a car park at Limnerslease, it closes at 5.15pm.
  • The car park is a short uphill walk to the historic home and studios. Visitors with access needs can be dropped off at the top of the road before parking, please follow the signs.
  • The route to Limnerslease is through woodlands, with uphill and sometimes uneven pathing.
  • You are free to explore the woodlands and Bench 1.
  • There are stairs and lift access.
  • Seats are available in the gallery spaces.
  • The door into the house is heavy and there is a step directly behind it, please push the green button to enter.
  • There are some interactable exhibits, including a touchable model of Watts Chapel and drawers to open.
  • You can explore through the rooms, but do not sit on the furniture.
  • Our stewards are there to answer questions and help, please ask for assistance if you are unsure.

Watts Cemetery Chapel
  • There is a footpath along the road to walk to the chapel.
  • There is limited road parking by the entrance.
  • The path to the chapel and around the cemetery is uphill and uneven, it may be slippery when wet.
  • This is a working chapel and cemetery.
  • There are steps to access the chapel.
  • You can spend as much time as you like in the space, the walls are touchable.
  • The lighting is dark inside.
