De Morgan Exhibition

Discover pottery and paintings from the De Morgan Collection at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village in the exhibition 'Decoration or Devotion?'.

In this exhibition, you can explore the motifs in the De Morgans' artworks. Why did the artists use the imagery they did? What is the meaning behind their symbols?

Bursting with colour and expression, over 60 beautiful artworks are on display in 'Decoration or Devotion?'. There is an audio guide on Smartify which you can listen to in the gallery or enjoy at home. Art For All participants from our community groups have written the text on wall labels. Reading these offers a different take on the artworks.

Entry is included in the price of your admission ticket. There is a free tour of the exhibition at 12.30pm every Tuesday and Saturday. No need to book, just come along.

With 70 paintings, 600 ceramics, and 800 drawings, you might be surprised the De Morgan Collection is so big! Not all of it is on display at Watts Gallery. Cannon Hall, Barnsley and Wightwick Manor in Wolverhampton also have De Morgan Galleries.

Evelyn's sister, Wilhelmina Stirling, formed the vast De Morgan Collection. She left it in her will for us all to enjoy. Today, the Collection is owned by the independent charity the De Morgan Foundation. It continues Stirling's wish to share the beautiful paintings and ceramics with you. And of course the surprising stories behind them.

Explore the De Morgan Gallery with curator Sarah Hardy with this quick 2-minute introduction to the couple and their artistic practises.
